  7. Once upon a time there was a program called ARS MAGNA by
  8. Michael Morton which created anagrams.  Alas, it didn't run on my
  9. system, so undaunted, I decided to write my own.  It has a
  10. reasonable (if sparse) Mac interface, and it runs in the background
  11. under System 7.
  12.  
  13. Karma Manager is a program which takes a word or phrase and
  14. rearranges the letters into other words or phrases.  For example,
  15. if you take the phrase "Anagram Maker" you can rearrange the
  16. letters to get "Karma Manager."
  17.  
  18. Some anagrams can be fun (or funny.)  So you think Madonna is an
  19. actress?  You can rearrange "Madonna Ciccone" to form "can do
  20. cinema con" and see the real Karma of this situation (OK, so maybe
  21. I'm misusing the word "Karma."  Sue me.) Take "Michael Jordan."
  22. We all know he gets "hi on cradle jam."  If you try "Saddam
  23. Hussein,"  we find out, with little surprise, that his "human side's
  24. sad."

  26. Karma Manager comes with a dictionary of words (KM Words)
  27. which it will use to create anagrams.  This is the default file that
  28. is used if no other dictionary file is specified.  Karma Manager
  29. also comes with a dictionary of proper names (KM Names) which
  30. you cas use optionally if you want to rearrange your phrase into
  31. names.  You can also supply your own dictionary or
  32. dictionaries.  Any text file with one word per line will work. 
  33. Karma Manager will also read the ARS MAGNA dictionaries so you
  34. can still use those if you have them (and paid for them.  :-)

  36. The output is dumped by default to a resizable window and output
  37. can optionally be captured in a text file.  Each list of words in the
  38. output appears only once, so you may need to rearrange the words
  39. to get interesting phrases.  That is, you won't get "big dude" and
  40. "dude big."  You only get one of them (actually you'll get "dude big")
  41. so you have to get used to mentally rearranging the words as you're
  42. scanning the output to find interesting anagrams.

  44.                             Installing Karma Manager

  46. Just copy the Karma Manager and the default dictionary, KM Words,
  47. to your working disk.  Be sure KM Words is in the same directory
  48. as Karma Manager if you don't want to be asked for a dictionary.

  50.                              Running Karma Manager
  51.  
  52. Karma Manager has two menus, File and Control.  Each menu item
  53. is briefly described below.

  55.                                  File menu items:

  57. New
  58.  
  59. New creates a window and pops up a dialog asking for the phrase
  60. to be anagrammed.  Type it in and click OK.  If Karma Manager can't
  61. find the default dictionary or you haven't supplied dictionary
  62. names (see below) it will pop up an alert letting you know this and
  63. then pop up a file selection dialog.  Select a dictionary file and
  64. click OK.  Karma Manager will put up an output window and then
  65. read the dictionary file(s).  When finished, it will start scrolling
  66. the anagrams by.  Karma Manager displays a little status bar at
  67. the bottom of the output window telling you what it's doing, and
  68. how many dictionary words and anagrams it has found so far. 
  69. Because of the CPU load, it only makes sense to do one of these at
  70. a time.  Therefore you can't start another until this window is
  71. closed.

  73. Dictionaries

  75. Selecting Dictionaries brings up a dialog box which allows you to
  76. build a list of dictionaries to use.  Click the add button to get a
  77. file selection dialog to add a dictionary file to the list.  If you
  78. have a dictionary name in the list that you want to remove from
  79. the list, click on it to select it and then click Remove.  When
  80. you're satisfied, click OK.  This list of dictionaries will be read
  81. instead of the default dictionary whenever you open a new
  82. anagram window.

  84. Capture to File

  86. This brings up a dialog box asking for a file name to dump text to. 
  87. All output will be dumped to this file until you select Cancel
  88. Capture.

  90.                                    Control Menu Items

  92. Pause

  94. Selecting Pause or typing cmd-P will temporarily stop the
  95. anagrams from scrolling by.  Subsequently selecting Resume or
  96. typing cmd-R will start 'em up again.

  100. Selecting Stop or typing cmd-. will stop computing anagrams but
  101. leave the window up.  Clicking the close box on the anagram
  102. window will do the same thing (and, obviously, close the window,
  103. too.)

  107. Karma Manager is released as is, and I can take no responsibility
  108. for any evil it might do.  I honestly don't think it will do any
  109. evil...but stuff happens.  Please let me know if you have any
  110. problems.
